Fender Stage Lead II Solid State Combo in Hollywood for $100

I am not recommending we all rush out and buy Fender 1980's solid state amps. However, that said, this is a good deal on a big powerful and well reviewed SS Amp. The Stage Lead II's came out in 1985-86 and these are big heavy (80 lbs) LOUD stage performance amps with lots of tone options including a very nice Fender clean sound. I think these were made in Japan. They are basically like Solid State versions of a Fender Twin Reverb.

I believe these Lead II's put out over 100 watts so if you are looking for some serious high volume onstage sound reinforcement - or you want an amp to leave at the practice space or as a backup/2nd amp this is a good choice.

Real Spring Reverb too so this can be a good basic Surf amp.

1961 Epiphone Caballero Acoustic in Brunswick GA for $250

Very cool little Mahogany Epiphone acoustic - just like an LGO or LG1 - excellent fingerpicking and blues guitars.

I've never seen that type of headstock on a USA Epiphone - but this certainly looks like a USA guitar to me. Sounds like it has some minor issues - not perfect - but what a deal.

Up for sale is my vintage Epiphone FT-30 Caballero all mahogany acoustic guitar. This is the same guitar as the Gibson LG-0.

Has a rare 4 digit serial number (8510) and metal Epiphone headstock badge, which dates it to 1960-1961.
Plays well with a nice full sound for a small-bodied guitar, which is what these guitars are famous for.
All solid mahogany. Good action. No buzzing. Frets in good shape. Neck is straight. Good original tuners. Stays in tune nicely.
Comes with original chipboard case. Has plenty of checking in the finish, which is to be expected in a 50 year old instrument.
There are a few tight age cracks in the body, but they do not affect it's playability or structural integrity. Also, it does have one spot on
the back in the lower bout area that looks to be a stable old repair. I have had this guitar for over 5 years and it looks and plays just
as good (or better) now as when I first got it.

Right now these guitars are going for $350 to $850 on eBay.
I am offering mine for sale locally at a lower price just to avoid the hassle of packing and shipping and eBay fees. Price: $250.

2000 Gibson Les Paul Special in Jacksonville FL for $600

I have one of these gloss finish Les Paul Specials in Red - mine is a 1998 - and the 498T pickup in the bridge is the way to go IMO. Gives plenty of modern bite but nice and clean when you roll back the volume. I like the Special over the Studio any day of the week - easier to hold, wear and play - but still rocks the Casbah - but that's just my opinion.

Burns 1964 Split Sound Jazz in Kansas City KS for $650

Nice deal on a highly collectible guitar if you are into the Burns line. This is a real London Built Burns Factory Guitar - from the Ampeg distribution period (not Baldwin).

I am a big fan of the Burns guitars aesthetically though as players they have their fans and detractors. Don't ever expect to instantly love a vintage guitar until you've owned and played one for awhile - they all have individual quirks.

Lyle 5102T in Kansas City KS for $150

These guitars were very popular in the 1960's and appear under names like Ventura, Aria, Univox, Bruno and Lyle. They were all made at the same Matsumoku factory and they are all pretty much the same - the pickups usually being the main difference between brands (I personally like the Univox).

I always try to emphasize to newbies that these are really not ES-335 type guitars because they don't have a solid tone block down the center or a stop tailpiece. I also think that as a general rule the single coil Japanese pickups sound better than the humbuckers during this period.

This Lyle 5102T guitar is in decent shape for its age. Manufactured from approximately 1965-1972. Few scuffs and missing one tuner gear cover. Pickups a bit lose. Could use a little TLC and minor repair. 2 volume and 2 tone controls, 3 position toggle switch, adjustable bridge. This guitar has a bolt on neck, and a pretty robust construction. Lyle Model 5102T semi-hollow body electric guitar marketed and distributed by L.D. Heater (L stands for Lyle) manufactured by Matsumoku out of Japan. This guitar was styled somewhat after the Gibson 330, 335, 345, and 335 electric guitar series in the late 60's and 70's. The Norlin Corporation owned both L.D. Heater and Gibson back then.

Alamo Jet tube combo in San Diego for $100

This is the later hybrid version of the Alamo Jet. Note that it does not have the two 12AX7 tubes on the right side of the chassis. The preamp and Reverb are solid state and it has a 5y3 rectifier and a 6V6gt power tube. The Carvin Ceramic Speaker will make this more robust - if slightly less efficient than the Alnico's that came stock. $100 is a good price overall for this.

SOLD - Nice set neck Guyatone w/ 1964 DeArmonds in Long Beach CA for $300

SOLD - This guitar went very fast - Jim C

UPDATE: I found out this is a Guyatone LG60 - circa 1959. You can see pics of it's brother the Guyatone LG50 in the hand of Hank Marvin (Shadows) and Ringo Starr (apparently a drummer of some sort).

These have very fat necks (good for slide) and the original pickups were supposedly weird and a bit of a problem so this one would be a better more playable axe than when it was new. There is an LG60B on ebay right now for $1300 but I doubt that is a current fair market price. With the changed pickups this is less collectible but might be more desirable.

******************

This looks like a very cool guitar - especially for slide or retro blues etc. Looks to be all maple, maybe semi hollow/chambered or maybe solid. It is a set neck which is a big plus and those DeArmonds look like a perfect fit.

In my imagination this would sound just like a Harmony H44 or Kay Vanguard, bright and present with nice sustain. But of course you'd have to play it to find out. I love the 3 position switch - just like a 1950's Chicago built guitar.

Trio of Les Paul, Duesenberg and Fender Super Sonic 60 for $3150 in Ventura CA

This seller has some very nice high end gear and he is not joking when he says it is a great deal. Retail on the Supersonic alone is $1300 and that Doozie goes for about $2500 new. If you buy the three together you are basically getting a very good deal on the guitars and the amp for free.

Of course $3150 is a lot of money but these are not items for the casual player. They are all top of the line pro instruments (Clapton often plays out of a Super Sonic live).

FYI - These Les Paul Limiteds have thick 1950's style necks with modern pickups and special color high gloss finishes.

I kinda like the blue refin on this guitar - though it may not look as cool or person. Should make a great stage guitar though - and if it's been set up you should be good to go.

Unfamiliar players are oftn surprise to find out these are fully hollow guitars - this is not the same as an ES335.

Yamaha Studio Lord Les Paul in Montgomery Alabama for $480

The Studio Lord is a nice Les Paul copy that was made in Japan by Yamaha. There are several versions SL370, SL450, etc. These are serious guitars - hard to find here in the USA. The original yamaha "Lord Player" is the most desirable but they rarely turn up for sale. This one may or may not have a set neck - I don't know what "Griff is on bolts" means but the open book headstock shows it is a 1970's model.

There are some beautful Burst versions of these guitars out there but this "Black Beauty" style is pretty cool as well.

Bought it 3 years ago directly from JAPAN. But Ive lost interest in playing electric guitar, coz didnt have time. This is a classic guitar, 70th Japanese les paul. 22 frets, 2 YAMAHA humbucks, griff is on bolts. BLACK finish. There are some scratches/dents on it. But generally very good for its year.. frets are good too. The only thing it needs is a new screw for front humbuck(doesnt sit tightened) or something customized.. But it doesnt affect the amazing sound of it. MADE IN JAPAN.. Price 480$ is probably negotiable. My cell is 334..******** . Please text in advance

Goya (Sweden) Classical acoustic in Chicago area for $80

There is a bit of a cult around the Swedish made Goya's based in part on the legendary care and meticulous service of the original Levin guitar factory in Sweden. there is a list of serial number available on line to help date this guitar if you are interested at http://www.whitetreeaz.com/vintage/goya.htm

Martin moved all Goya manufacturing to Japan in 1977 but Goya's were being made in Sweden and sold inthe United Stated by Herschmann and Kustom as early as 1955.

I believe this is a Goya, there is no sticker ... though it does say "Made in Sweden" inside and the rest of my guitars are of the period which Goya was around. I also have a Goya (1958 G-10) listed.

I will let this one go for a low price for two reasons ...
1. The top has a crack in it, one which can be repaired and not even noticeable, but I won't fix it so I will lessen the price. It doesn't effect the playability or tone AT ALL.
2. It has no name, tag, or sticker. It does however have a serial. So lets say you love to research vintage guitars ... and this becomes your treasure. Guess what, you only paid $80 for it!!!

Cash and carry only.
No scammers.

Weiss acoutsic in Chicago for $100

I am always interested in posting a guitar brand or model I've never seen before - this Weiss is one of those. While this looks similar to many Kay and Harmony birch bodied student guitars it is not exactly the same so it may be a unique model.

Amazingly enough I think this is actually a copy of a Harmony - note the attempt at the faux tiger-stripe finish so common on other Chicago built student guitars.

Here is a fine Copper color Tosca which was made by Valco/Supro in 1961. It is short scale rocker with the famous Supro pickup, loud and real!! There is the Supro metal serial number plaque on the back of the headstock which dates it to 1961. Great straight baseball bat shape neck with Rosewood Fingerboard and Rosewood Bridge!! Excellent action. Clean Gold pickup and hardware. Kluson Deluxe tuners. Finish shows some dings and crazing but this is a fine example of an early 60's Supro Guitar. Seagull S6 - Your First Guitar

“If I was just starting to learn guitar, what instrument should I buy?” I am asked that question from time to time. My response is always the Seagull S6.

When I started to play guitar, my Dad bought a Harmony Patrician from Will’s Pawn Shop for $20 USD. It came with heavy gauge Black Diamond strings, which were the only strings Will sold. Those strings were at least a half inch above the neck at the twelfth fret. It was difficult to play. The cheap open gear tuners were hard to turn and one of the tuning posts bent to the side. It was a better instrument than the ones some of my friends owned. At least it was made of wood.

The new beginner guitars at the time were made of birch and had ladder bracing. The necks were thick. The tuners were not much better than my Patrician was. The strings were just about as high off the neck. A dull finish came painted on to the guitars top. The pickguard was just a painting of a pickguard.

Guitar technology has come a long way. CNC machines turn out exacting measurements on just about any instrument. Heavy strings are still available, but most of us choose light or medium gauge. However, some parts of a guitar differentiate a good guitar from a bad guitar.

Many beginner models now come with a solid top or soundboard instead of a laminated top. However, even though the top is solid, there are other considerations. Many instruments are made of high-pressure laminate; wood shavings and dust that have been mixed with a bonding agent and pressed together, with a veneer covering to make a board.

DX-1
Even Martin uses this technique on their DX series of guitars. Low priced instruments use this process on guitar soundboards. Some guitars may come with solid spruce tops, but the high gloss polyester finish erodes the sound.

What makes the Seagull S6 unique?

The top is solid and made of book matched cedar. Cedar is a material used on guitar soundboards for centuries. Most Flamenco guitars come with cedar tops. A book matched top is made by sawing a plank of wood in half then reattaching the halves together. This enhances and evens out the grain of the wood. As the guitar gets older and is played, the vibrations produced on a solid guitar soundboard become more robust. This is the aging process.

Another unique factor on the S6 is the top is made in such a way that the top slightly arches around the bridge area. Seagull calls this “the compound curve.” When it comes to producing sound vibrations on a guitar, the area around the bridge is the most active. Therefore, the arching emphasizes the vibrations and makes the sound more dynamic.

Although the Seagull S6 utilizes laminate for its sides and back, but not made from high-pressure wood material. Seagull uses wild cherry wood sawn into three thin strips glued together with the center strips grain going the opposite way from the top and bottom strip.

Though solid wood is preferable, this process gives added strength to the body.

The Seagull’s neck is made of silver leaf maple wood that is readily available. The feel of the neck may be a little bigger than on other guitars; however, the instrument is very playable and the slight bulk of the neck enhances the sound. The fretboard is made of Indian rosewood.

The neck is attaches to the guitar by two wooden dowels that come through the guitars heel and glued into the inner neck block. This eliminates glue between the heel and body, thus allowing a continuous wood-to-wood fit.

The headstock is unique in a couple of ways. The most obvious is the diamond shape taper. The purpose of this shape is to allow the strings to be pulled straight back instead of pulling to the side. This accomplishes two things. The string does not bind up at the nut, which will adversely affect tuning and the straight pull minimizes fatigue on the neck.

The other unique factor on the S6’s headstock is the way it attaches to the neck. The process is known as the reverse headstock. The neck starts out as a straight piece of lumber. Wood is sawn at a 45-degree angle at the top of the neck. The top piece is turned upside down, so the grain runs in the opposite direction and re-glued to the neck. Older guitars were made using this process.

High quality guitars costing four times as much as the Seagull utilize this technique.

A truss rod placed in the guitars neck is accessible for adjustment through the soundhole.

The last factor affecting the neck of the S6 is the pitch of the neck. An improper angle will cause the sound to be too thin or too muddy. Seagull utilizes a machine that adjusts the neck pitch perfectly.

The S6 is custom polished instead of spraying with a thick coat of polyester. The coat applied is similar to the French polish used on violins and some guitars. This method does not dampen the sound emanating from the guitars top.

Perhaps the most desirable factor of a Seagull S6 is the price. This instrument sells for less than $400 USD. You may even find a used S6 for half of that price.

A few comparable instruments to the Seagull are the Epiphone Masterbuilt line and the Taylor Big Baby. The Masterbuilt Epiphones are excellent guitars that are made entirely of solid wood. However most sell for at least $100 USD more than the Seagull S6.

The Taylor Big Baby is a large version of Taylor’s travel guitar. The top is solid spruce, but the back and sides are laminate. The neck screws into the neck block with two screws exposed at the 16th fret. There is no neck heel. The Big Baby is only slightly smaller than a full size guitar. It has a 15/16th scale. Despite these drawbacks, the Big Baby has a great sound and the factory set up is great. This instrument sells for about $50 more than the Seagull, but it does come with a gig bag.

One thing about the Seagull S6 you need to know is the action is set a little higher than I prefer. This is remedied by removing the bridge saddle and sanding down the underside slightly. There are instructions on the internet for this process.

The saddle and nut are made of a synthetic material called Tusq. This is much better than the plastic used on most guitars in this price range. A benefit of Tusq is that it is very easy to work with and comparable to bone. You can also have the music stores repair department do this for you.

I would recommend before removing the saddle, place a mark on the lower side. The saddle is compensated. If you put it in backwards, you will not get the guitar in tune.

The S6 can be ordered with the Godin Quantum Electronic system. This raises the price of the guitar by around $100.

Seagull guitars are made in La Patrie, Quebec Canada and are owned by Robert Godin. Mr. Godin produces several other brands including Godin guitars (mostly electric instruments), Simon and Patrick guitars (named after his sons), La Patrie classical guitars, Norman guitars, and Arts, and Lutherie guitars (his budget line).

Looking at the inner sticker of a Seagull, you may note that it says "handmade."  To some extent, this is true. Guitars are labour intensive and a lot of the work involves an individual working by hand to make the instrument. Most guitar manufacturers work this same way. I do not want to diminish the quality of work these folks do. A truly handmade instrument by a luthier is something special, made by one individual, and is going to set you back a lot of money.

Perhaps the ultimate aspect that sets the S6 apart from other guitars, even those that are more expensive, is the Seagull's sound. The Seagull S6 has a boomy, but crisp tonal quality. It is a most excellent instrument for strumming or fingerpicking.

La Patrie is a small community in eastern Quebec. Godin employs almost half of the population.

Seagull guitars are wonderful instruments. I own a Seagull Grand, which is a parlor-sized guitar. I love the tone it produces. As I have said before, as these guitars get older, they sound better. The S6 is the first guitar that Seagull produced back in 1982. It is not just an excellent instrument, but a great value as well.
